The Department of Bengali Started functioning from its inception with elective Bengali in the pass course. A number of eminent teachers graced the Department. The Honours course was introduced in the year 1994 due to the earnest effort of the then Teacher-in-Charge of Dr. Somendra Narayan Chaudhuri and with the active co-operation of Sri Banadev Mukherjee and Sri Rabi Roy. The Department was then helped by a number of part-time teachers. Nearly a hundred percent success rate has been achieved by the students of this Department in the University Examinations for the last three years. The Department organizes educational tour since 2003. Different projects are assigned to the Honours students to develop their innovative skills. Various teaching-aids like audio-cassettes, paintings are used by the teachers for the advancement of the teaching learning process.The teachers have been able to achieve the cordial relation with the students through counseling process.



Infrastructure
The Department has its own Departmental Library with sufficient books. The Central Library too has a rich collection of Bengali books. There are paintings (as Patachitra) and Tape-Recorder, laptop, projector and screen at disposal to make the classes audio-visual. The Department has computers and printers with internet connection.

Program outcomes
Literature deals with emotion and logic which helps to widen the humane aspect and finer senses. Literature imbibes the courage, tolerance and humanity which is needed to combat the complexity and conflict in the modern world. . Literature is interwoven with History, Society, Philosophy. Political Theories which enables the students to comprehend life in holistic manner. Literature develop respect for different cultures. Literature gives a flair for comparative study.

Program specific outcomes
Bengali Literature develops the communication process. .A robust and dynamic literature lends support to the vibrant tradition of Performing Arts in Theatre, Film, Music, Dance etc. The students have ample opportunity to showcase their talents in research, education, literary and artistic ventures and in professions like journalism, film, advertisement, multi-media,./printing and civil administration.

Academic Activities
Teaching- Learning Methods: The students are taken to Educational Tours in various places to give them exposure to different cultures worldwide beyond the syllabus. The students were taken to Jorasanko Thakurbari, Town Hall, William Kerry Museum, Dupleix museum, Gurusaday Museum, Swami Vivekananda’s Ancestral House and Cultural Centre, painting exhibition and theatre in Academy of Fine Arts, etc. Students have been taken to see Bengali Drama for a better understanding of Theatre which is a part of their syllabus. Films are shown frequently to help the students have a wider exposure to society.
Recent activities: 1. Observation of Bhasa Divas. 2. Study tour to Victoria Museum. 3. Educational Tour to Jorasanko Thakur Bari, Vivekananda’s House. 4. Interdisciplinary classes are frequently held.

Extension Activities:
1. Anindita Das, Bengali Honours (2nd yr) won 1st prize in T-shirt painting in Spardha 2018, fest of Shyama Prasad College. 2. Joyita Bhowmik of the Department received Best Female Volunteer Award of National Service Scheme, Calcutta University Zone IV 3. Sujit Halder has received the Best All Rounder Prize of the Department for academic and extra-curricular performance.
