The Department of Philosophy started with the pass course at the undergraduate level in 1965 with one Lecturer Prof. Asit Sen. Then Dr. Amarnath Bhattacharyya joined the Department. The affiliation for the Honours Course was granted by Calcutta University in the academic session 2004-2005. The course has an intake capacity of 30 students. The students are sincere, serious and dedicated and take part in various competitions viz. sports, debates, quiz etc. organized by the college. We sincerely hope to progress in the pursuit of excellence. We take class tests and tutorial classes on regular basis. Group discussions are also held which benefit the students immensely. Students contribute their creative skills in the Departmental Wall-Magazine. The Department has a Departmental book bank which lends out books to the students. Program outcomes

P.O. I: The purpose of the program is to guide the students and researchers to analyze the ideas of rights, justice and freedom.
P.O. II: The program gives the students an insight into the different governmental processes in India and assists them in a better understanding of Indian politics.
P.O. III: Understanding Indian Tradition and Culture: This course will let the students to understand the basic roots, heritage and tradition of Indian culture.
P.O. IV: Development of Social Awareness: Another outcome of this course is to develop them socially aware.
P.S.O. I: Reasoning Power: Logic will develop the reasoning power of the students.
P.S.O. II: Skill Enhancement: The course will enhance the student’s skill on the various social issues, in the field of argumentation.
P.S.O.III:Balanced Personality: This course will teach the students to be balanced in all respects.



Infrastructure
The Department of Philosophy has its own Departmental library which contains all the requisite resources as per the syllabus of the University. The Department has computers along with internet connection and printer.

Academic Activities
In the academic session 2015-16, the Department of Philosophy organised the following academic activities:
1. A students’ seminar was organised on 27th February 2016. The topic was Subtance: Locke, Berkeley and Hume. 2nd year Philosophy Honours students participated in this seminar.
2. An invited lecture was organised on 29th February 2016, on the topic SECULARISM: CONCEPT THEORY AND PRACTICE. The speaker was Prof. (Dr.) Atashee Chatterjee Sinha, Department of Philosophy, Jadavpur University.
3. An excursion to the Gandhi Museum, Barrackpore was organised to widen the students’ understanding on Indian History.

Extension Activities
The Department is consciously aware of making education relevant to real-life situations. preventing the alienation of the educated from society. developing in the educated a responsibility towards society and developing the learner's knowledge through a wider exposure to real-life situations. Students of the Department actively participate in NSS programs. They voluntarily involve in social work and camp organized by the college. Students of the Department actively participate in various career counselling programs, soft skill development programs and social awareness programs.

Student Achievements
Educational Excursion- Visited West Bengal Legislative Assembly (Budget Session) and Kolkata High Court with the students of Department of Political Science on 25th February 2015. Educational Excursion- College has organized an educational tour to Bandel Church and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's house on December, 2017.

Future Plans
Seminar in collaboration with reputed Instructions to be organized. Invited lectures by renowned personalities on syllabus-oriented topics are to be planned. Different programs involving student interaction like debates, and quizzes are also to be organized.
