~ Carolus Linnaeus
The Department of Biosciences as a separate entity in origin was established in August,
2002. In broad sense the Department Biosciences accommodate three separate streams of life science-Zoology, Botany
and Physiology under the same roof. Although due to some circumstances, Physiology is not available for the
students for temporary period. The Department of Zoology is well organized with equipped laboratory, Departmental
library facility, a team of dynamic and energetic faculty members and a healthy and student friendly environment.
The faculty members of the Department include Prof. Banani Mandal (Head of the Department) ,
Prof. Debjani Chatterjee and as technical staff Smt. Saila Sonkar (Rudra) provide his service for the Department.
The Department has been able to expand the arena of knowledge to the students through regular theory and practical
classes, seminars, debates, projects and excursions, etc. Its joyful for us that our students have been getting
jobs in different sectors after their graduation.
Infrastructure
Prof. Banani Mondal has successfully finished a UGC-sanctioned minor project
entitled "Study of fin fish diversity in mangrove based Indian Sundarbans" in the period 2011-2013. UGC

Extension Activities
The teachers of our Department provide guidance to the students through regular
interaction to face the job interviews in effective way. Except scheduled syllabus, the students are also
advised to prepare impressive Curriculum Vitae by the Departmental faculties. It always remains as our prime
effort to provide a well- known environment to them so that they can feel that they are at home during the
three years of graduation course. The Department organises visits to different locations where they can observe
the environment and its relation with its inhabitants which make them understanding the species competition,
species interaction, application of different technology and after all, species conservation in the lap of
nature. In necessity through counselling sessions, the faculty members focus the students about the exposure
to the hard realities of life which sometimes help the students from less privileged background to develop
their personalities. Student’s feedback is very important for us and we try to improve the Department for
further betterment. In necessity through counselling sessions, the faculty members focus the students about
