The Department of English of Jogesh Chandra Chaudhuri College started functioning from the inception of the college in 1965 with Elective English as a subject in the General (pass) course. The Honours course was introduced in the year 2000.The Department has been able to prove its mettle through various seminars, debates, class and group assignments, wall magazines, excursions, etc. We also invite eminent Professors to address our students. We have an aim to take our students to various prominent Universities/colleges to broaden their horizons. We are really happy to note that our students are getting different jobs in various important sectors. We get feedback from students in class and outside. We try to incorporate their suggestions in our teaching, keeping in mind their problems. Some guardians too come with problems and feedback.

Program outcomes:PO1: Development of Critical Faculties: The students of the department of English will learn to develop their critical faculties and apply their newly developed skills to critically evaluate literary texts. PO2: Communicating effectively and efficiently: The students will develop the ability to express their ideas clearly and to interact with others in an effective manner. PO3: Self-directed and Lifelong Learning: The students will realise the importance of upgrading their skills and knowledge and will be inspired to do so at regular intervals. PO4: Social Interaction: The students will learn the art of effective interaction with peers, faculty, management and also any other conversational partners. PO5: Ethics: The value system inculcated in the students by the institution will enable them to identify and follow the correct life path.
Program specific outcomes:PSO1: Literary Acumen: The students of the department of English are exposed to great literary works and learn to judge the qualities of different literary texts. They are equipped to identify connections and continuity between the past and contemporary cultures. They are also equipped to identify the disjuncture in these traditions. PSO2: Academic Writing: The students develop the abilities to interpret, analyse and appreciate literature along with writing and presentation skills which will be of great aid to them in careers like teaching, research, publishing, journalism and media. PSO3: Cultural Interaction: The students will become aware of various cultural perspectives and will learn to develop tolerance for viewpoints different from their own. An exposure to literary, cultural and social theories will enrich their critical understanding.

Academic Activities
A National Level Seminar was conducted jointly by Computer Science Department and Mathematics Department and one journal has been published as "Quantum Information and Computer".

1 Teaching We endeavour to show dramatised versions of the plays taught in class, on the celluloid. We are fortunate to have a group of active and interested students who involve themselves in various activities. With our enthusiastic students and dedicated teachers, we certainly hope to carve a niche for ourselves in the academic world. We also organise students' seminars. Students also contribute their creative skills in the Departmental Wall-Magazine. Apart from the regular chalk and talk teaching, we have also used other methods of teaching like showing films of syllabus related texts of Novels and plays, and powerpoint presentations in the classroom. We take class tests on regular basis. We also take tutorial classes beyond scheduled lecture hours.
2 Research Our faculty members are actively involved in research works.They have been invited as Resource Person in several educational institutes within Indian and beyond. Dr Sravasti Guhathakurta has published four research papers and read papers in several national and international seminars including "Amity, Empathy, Harmony: The Triumph of Humanism Amidst Intimations of Hostility and Distrust" in Khulna University, Bangladesh. Dr. Jaydeep Sarangi delivered keynote address in international conferences at Andhra University, Visakhapatnam and Holy Cross College, Trichy. Ms Sudipta Mandol also read two research papers in seminars in Kolkata. Seminar/ invited lecture: Every year we invite resource persons as invited speaker for our students.In the session 2014-2015 Dr. Rafat Ali of Jadavpur University and Professor Amrit Sen engaged our students. We also regularly counsel students who are in such need and also try other methods to improve their language, a necessary component of our subject. In the academic session 2015-16, the department of English organised the following academic activities: Translation Workshop by Professor Bashabi Fraser, Napier University Craighouse, Edinburg, Scotland. On 27th January 2016. An Inter-college Students’ Seminar on English Renaissance was organised on 10th October 2015. Frequently, classes are held amidst natural settings, beyond the concrete classrooms
3 Nature Study Club 2 year Honours class was held in Indrani Park on 13th January 2016.
4 Interaction with underprivileged Students of the department went to nearby primary school to interact with the students who come from underprivileged families.
5 Visit by renowned poet Sahitya Academy Award winning Bengali poet Subodh Sarkar interacted with the students of English department on 21st January2016. Inhouse translation workshop was conducted by Dr. Jaydeep Sarangi and Dr. Sravasti Guha Thakurata on 28th March 2016. Activities of the session of 2016-'17 Wall Magazine was published on Mahasweta Devi on 11th August 2016. Interdisciplinary class was taken by Dr. Kaushiki Dasgupta of the Dept. of History,Gour Banga University on 27th August 2016. Parent-Teacher meeting was held on 14th August 2016.

Student Achievements
We believe in the all round development of our students. Students have performed well in University examinations and scored 1st class marks. Some of our students continued with higher studies in premier universities like JNU and BHU. One of our students (Dipayan Dey) has bagged the best all rounder prize from our college in the year 2015.

Future Plans
We want to take our students to slum areas nearby to develop skills in English among slum children.
We have decided to start remedial classes for students interested in improving their performance.
We want at least two invited lectures this year before the puja recess in October-November.

Ankit Varma, Ankita Pandey, Gourav Ghosh, Suchetana Roy and many others have been serving in different institutions and banking sectors. We encourage our students to prepare for competitive examinations.
