The Department of Economics was there in the college from its inception. Economics was taught as a subject of Commerce both in General and Honours. Economics as B.A./B.Sc. general subject was also there from the beginning. Economics Honours was introduced in 2001. The Department has three sanctioned posts, and at present there are three full-timed teachers.. Apart from the conventional teaching method, the Department organises seminars, debates, group discussion etc.



Infrastructure
The Department has its own seminar library with many books which are given to the students whenever they need them.

Academic Activities
Apart from the conventional teaching method, the Department organises seminars, debates, group discussion etc. Some events of the current calendar year: Economics Department students field visit to a school of underprivileged children

Extension Activities
The research works of all the faculty members of the Department have a societal perspective. Dr. Kanjilal has done her Ph.D. work on municipal services and finance. Smt. Dasgupta is conducting the research work on urban co-operative banks in Jadavpur University. Dr. Rit has done his Ph.D. work on marketing of agricultural products on the basis of primary as well as secondary data, in which different aspects of marketing, the share of producers’ in ‘consumer price’, the return of the poor and marginal farmers etc. are dealt with. The students are being encouraged to conduct their project work on socio economic activities. Some lectures are delivered on Ecological and Environmental Economics though the topics on these subjects are not explicitly included in the curriculum.

Future Plans
Power point presentations in more classes are on the anvil. The Department has made a proposal to hold a two day National Seminar on "Globalization and Unorganized Sector in India" to the UGC in the current academic year. ‘Invited Talks’ on different fields of Economics by eminent resource persons will be held at regular intervals.
